Start with a useful contract

Describe the capability your API provides, the required inputs and the meaning of each response. Agree how validation errors, missing records and transient failures should be represented before connecting the first consumer.

Separate access from orchestration

In an API-led approach, system APIs can encapsulate access to underlying systems, while process APIs coordinate business behaviour and experience APIs serve a particular consumer. Use these boundaries when they reduce duplication and make ownership clearer, rather than adding layers automatically.

Automate with recovery in mind

An API call may succeed even when the caller receives a timeout. Agree idempotency keys or business references, bounded retries and reconciliation procedures. Protect credentials through platform-supported configuration and keep personal data out of logs.

Prove the boundaries

Test contracts, transformations and failure paths with representative inputs. In a Mule application, use MUnit where appropriate and verify the complete flow in a non-production environment before release. This is a design guide, not a claim about a completed client implementation.

A starting point for your own integration work. Adapt and validate it against your platform version and project requirements.
